What is farsightedness?

Farsightedness, also called hyperopia, is a common refractive error. Many people see distant objects more clearly than near objects, though experiences vary. Some notice no problem when they’re young, while significant hyperopia can blur vision at any distance.

How your eyes focus

Refraction is how light bends as it passes through one material to another. In a healthy eye, the cornea and lens bend incoming light to focus precisely on the retina. The retina then converts light into signals that travel through the optic nerve to the brain—creating the images you see.

What are refractive errors?

Refractive errors occur when the eye’s shape prevents light from focusing on the retina. Contributing factors can include:

  • The length of the eyeball (longer or shorter)
  • Changes in corneal shape
  • Age-related changes in the lens

How does farsightedness develop?

In hyperopia, images focus behind the retina instead of on it. This often happens when the eyeball is too short, preventing light from focusing directly on the retina. An abnormal shape of the cornea or lens can also contribute.

Who is at risk?

Farsightedness can affect both children and adults. It impacts about 5–10% of Americans, and having farsighted parents may increase your likelihood of developing the condition.

Treatment options

Eyeglasses
The simplest and safest way to correct farsightedness. Your doctor can prescribe lenses to help you see your best.

Contact lenses
Contacts lens act as the first refractive surface for incoming light, often providing clearer vision, a wider field of view, and excellent comfort when fitted and used properly. Some eye conditions may limit contact lens wear—your doctor can advise you.

Refractive surgery
Procedures that permanently change corneal shape to improve focus. Surgery can reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses and contacts. Options should be discussed with your eye care professional.
