Healthy Vision Month: Protect Your Eyes in a Screen-Heavy World

If it feels like you’re always on a screen, you’re not imagining it. More than 104 million working-age Americans spend over seven hours a day in front of screens. Even more concerning: among people exposed to excessive screen time, over 31 million reported they haven’t seen an optometrist in the past year.

That’s why Healthy Vision Month Honolulu is the perfect time to reset your habits, especially if you’re working in an office, on the go around town, or juggling family schedules in Makiki, Ala Moana, Kaka‘ako, or Downtown.

4 simple ways to protect your eyes (starting today)

1) Schedule your annual eye exam

A comprehensive eye exam isn’t just about updating your glasses, it’s also a check-in on your long-term eye health. At Simply Eyes Hawaii, Dr. Tracie Inouchi and Dr. Sherry S. Y. Wong tailor your exam to your daily life (screens, driving, outdoor time, contact lenses, dry eye symptoms, and more). If it’s been over a year, Healthy Vision Month is your nudge to book.

2) Wear sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection

Honolulu sun is no joke, whether you’re walking around Ala Moana Beach Park or driving with bright glare on the windshield. Choose lenses that block 100% UVA and UVB (and consider polarized lenses for comfort).

3) Reduce eye strain with screen breaks

Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Add a few practical upgrades: blink more, raise your screen slightly, and keep your display an arm’s length away.

4) Eat for eye health

Build meals around colorful, nutrient-rich foods, especially those with vitamin A, vitamin C, and lutein. Think leafy greens, orange/yellow vegetables, and fruits.

Quick self-check: is it time to come in?

If you’ve noticed headaches after computer use, blurry vision late in the day, or dry/irritated eyes, don’t “push through.” Healthy eyes support a healthier you, and small changes now can pay off for years.
